National LGBT Cancer Network Seeks Survey Participants

The National LGBT Cancer Network wants to do something about the increasing prevalence of anal cancer in our community.

First, we need to find out what people know about anal cancer. We are asking gay and bisexual men to complete a brief (5-minute) anonymous online survey to assess their knowledge of anal cancer. We are particularly interested in hearing from men of color and hope that you will publicize this request through your blog, listserves, websites and mailing lists. The more respondents we have, the more we learn.

In the general population, anal cancer is a rare disease, but among men who have sex with men (MSM), the incidence of anal cancer is 40% higher and increasing annually. However, the majority of gay men know little about the disease, have never been tested for it, or even know that screening tests exist. Health care professionals, too, remain divided on how and whether to screen for it. In fact, a standardized screening protocol for anal cancer does not yet exist.

Gay men claim discrimination in El Paso

From KVIA.com

EL PASO -- A group of gay men say they were discriminated against by security guards and El Paso police officers because of their sexual orientation.

It was a late Sunday night when Carlos Diaz de Leon and a group of his friends decided to stop by Chico's Tacos for a late-night dinner.

They said they were minding their own business when security guards inside asked them to leave.

"Two of my friends wereactually were kissing," Carlos said. Two of Carlos' male friends, that is.

"We went, sat down to eat our food and security guards came and said that if they kept doing that, they were going to throw us all out of the restaurant."

Carlos said he then asked them why? Their response, according to Carlos: "They said 'we didn't allow that gay stuff to go on here.' "

Pride Month Wraps With Las Cruces & Santa Fe

By David Stocum

Saturday June 27th marked the end of the 2009 Pride season with record setting events in Santa Fe and Las Cruces.

Nearly 2000 people enjoyed a sunny, breezy day in Pioneer Women’s Park. This years Southern New Mexico Pride included several new events making for a weekend long celebration. The celebration began Friday with Drag Bingo at the NMSU Golf Course Clubhouse and concluded with a Pool Party at the Desert Hills Pool Sunday evening. Southern New Mexico Pride has grown every year for the last five years and is the largest GLBTQ event in the southern part of the state.

Santa Fe Pride moved from the Plaza to the new Railyard Plaza which allowed for more vendors and a first time beer garden. The larger area lead to the creation of family areas and an area for adults only allowing everyone to create their own experience. Officials report the crowd was one of the largest in recent memory. Attendees report the new location was a success and they were looking forward to next year.

The weekend events also served as commemorations of the Stonewall riots which occurred 40 years ago on June 28th.

FTMI New Mexico Chapter Commends Lawmakers for Introduction of Inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act

Albuquerque NM, June 24, 2009: FTMInternational Albuquerque Chapter applauded US lawmakers today for introducing an inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which would protect LGBT employees from workplace discrimination. The bill, which enjoys bi-partisan support in Congress, would add orientation and gender identity to existing federal employment non-discrimination laws.

FTMI Albuquerque President Adrien Lawyer stated, "We urge our Congressional representatives to co-sponsor this important worker protection legislation."

Currently, 12 states have LGBT-inclusive nondiscrimination protections, covering nearly 40 percent of Americans. And, according to numerous surveys, large majorities of likely voters in the U.S. support federal employment non-discrimination laws to protect LGBT people. Polling data from 2006 shows that voters are more likely to support a candidate who votes for an LGBT discrimination law than they are to vote against.

FTMInternational President Rabbi Levi Alter added, "For all who want to contribute to America through gainful employment and hard, honest work, it is vitally important to ensure that all employees have access to a fair and equitable workplace."

ABQ NPR Station to Air Local GLBTQ Radio Show

Friday June 26th from 8:30 am to 9:00 am KUNM will be having a GLBTQA Radio Show. This half-hour show is hopefully the first of many more. On this show the host will discuss the Domestic Partners Bill before the New Mexico Legislature with Linda Siegle.

It will also discuss the hour long on Sunday June 28th from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. This show will feature Shannon Minter, lead counsel on Prop 8 and many more local LGBTQA advocates.

EQNM is working throughout the state to have full recognition of all LGBTQ relationships. Without marriage equality or domestic partnerships, LGBTQ individuals and same-sex couples are forced to pay expensive legal fees in order to create a patchwork of basic legal protections, like durable power of attorney and living wills. Domestic partnerships are one step to providing legal protections necessary for families to care for their loved ones.

While not everyone in our community wishes to marry, everyone deserves the freedom to make this choice. As a community, LGBTQ individuals and families deserve to be treated with dignity, respect, and to have equal protection of the laws. Being excluded from this right not only deprives same-sex couples of critical legal protections, it also demeans and stigmatizes same-sex couples and encourages discrimination.

Please listen to these show and call KUNM afterwards 505.277.4806 to encourage them to support a local GLTBQA show.

Community Leaders and Activists Create Movements Future at Summit

By David Stocum

Approximately 100 LGBT community leaders and activists assembled at the UNM Law School on June 6, 2009 for the Summit on LGBT Rights New Mexico. Saturday’s event was the first such summit since 2003. The summit was organized by an Ad Hoc committee including representatives from several LGBT and ally organizations along with individual activists. Attendees represented a broad range of organizations and geographic areas including Las Cruces, Alamogordo, Mora, Albuquerque and Santa Fe.

The morning was devoted to assessing where the LGBT rights movement in New Mexico is, how we got here with the afternoon devoted to what the next steps should be.

Havens Levitt facilitated an interactive presentation of the history of the New Mexico LGBT movement to lead the day off. One striking point of this history is that New Mexico in many areas has been in the lead on issues like employment non-discrimination. A recap of the 2009 Legislative session was presented by Rep. Mimi Stewart and Linda Siegle, EQNM Lobbyist. Stewart and Siegle reported that the Senate continues to be the roadblock to relationship recognition. Rep. Stewart said that she had the votes to pass the Domestic Partners Rights and Responsibilities Act if it had gotten out of the Senate. They detailed the drama filled process of SB12 and its ultimate failure to pass the Senate. Siegle reported that a new bill separating Domestic Partnership from the Marriage statutes is being drafted by the Legislative Council Service. The new bill is intended to win over critics of SB12 including the Catholic Church. The morning session was wrapped up with Shannon Minter, Lead Counsel California Marriage Cases and Lynn Perls an Albuquerque attorney who helped draft the Domestic Partners Rights and Responsibilities Act providing information on litigation and legislation. This session provided perspective on the risks and benefits of each approach. It also put the New Mexico movement in context of the national LGBT rights movement.

Andrew Gans and Sonia Bettez facilitated the afternoon session which focused on the future of the LGBT rights movement in New Mexico. Small groups looked at the questions of where do you want our movement to be, what’s most important to you and what is needed to get there? All summit attendees used the results of the small groups to set some priority areas for going forward. A second round of small groups began creating action plans based on those priorities. These action plans were then reported to the larger group and actions begun.

The summit was followed by a rally on Civic Plaza in downtown Albuquerque and a reception for Equal Rights Champions at the 4th Street Nightclub.

Court upholds Prop 8; State continues to recognize 18,000 marriages

From Lambda Legal

(San Francisco) May 26, 2009 —Today, in a 6 to 1 decision, the California Supreme Court upheld Proposition 8, the ballot measure that eliminated the right of same sex couples to marry. In the ruling authored by Chief Justice Ronald George, the Court stated "We emphasize only that among the various constitutional protections recognized in the Marriage Cases as available to same-sex couples, it is only the designation of marriage — albeit significant — that has been removed by this initiative measure." At the same time, the court unanimously ruled that the more than 18,000 marriages that took place between June 16 and November 4, 2008 continue to be fully valid and recognized by the state of California. The decision reaffirmed the Court's prior holding that sexual orientation is subject to the highest level of protection under the California Constitution.

In a strongly worded dissent, Justice Carlos Moreno stated, "The rule the majority crafts today not only allows same-sex couples to be stripped of the right to marry that this court recognized in the Marriage Cases, it places at risk the state constitutional rights of all disfavored minorities. It weakens the status of our state Constitution as a bulwark of fundamental rights for minorities protected from the will of the majority."

Las Cruces Artist Presents Retrospective

As a brief retrospective spanning the years of the late 60's through 2009, a survey of Wayne Carl Huber's art will be on exhibit during the month of June at the Blue Gate Fine Art Gallery, 3111 N. Main St. on the Downtown Mall in Las Cruces. The opening celebration will be held on the First Friday Ramble: June 5, 5-7:00PM at which Wayne will meet and greet visitors and patrons. He will also give a gallery talk the next day from 11:00AM until noon, when he will share information about the thirty plus pieces representing over forty years of diversity, all of which are priced for purchase.

Besides being a creative artist, he has had an equally long profession as an instructor. He holds a Bachelor of Art Education from the Eastern Michigan University and Masters of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Arizona. Wayne has also studied architecture and liberal arts.

Huber's works embrace a variety of media, subject matter, and styles. They have been accepted in many juried shows. Notable judges who have designated his works as prize worthy are artist, Elaine De Kooning and Dr. John A. Richardson, author of Art: The Way It Is. His paintings are in many private and permanent collections. Locally he had been represented at the JME Gallery.

Flo Hosa Dougherty's overview is that Wayne has been perpetually on the contemporary edge regardless of the date on the calendar. He is as timely a painter for today as he was yesteryear. His individuality sets the mood, his inventive nature synchronizes and his daring controls the compositional factors. His canvases offer strong direct statements which seem to broaden and intensify the impact for the viewer.

Presently Wayne has adopted Las Cruces as his hometown with an exuberance. Comediennes Vickie Shaw and Jennie McNulty are coming to Albuquerque

Houston Native and Stand Up Comedian Vickie Shaw is teaming up with fellow comic Jennie McNulty for a fantastic night of Stand Up Comedy and Improvisation. You won’t want to miss these funny women, both recently voted to the top 10 Funniest Lesbians in America. Each will perform stand up separately and then play together doing hysterical improvisation based on suggestions from the audience. Come enjoy the show and celebrate the release of Vickie's new DVD, "You Can Take The Girl Outta Texas"

Vickie Shaw - Vickie Shaw comes to Albuquerque with her slow paced (she's southern), incredibly endearing, (she's southern), sharp, don't mess with her (she's southern!), comedy. Vickie starred in her own one woman show on MTV Network’s LOGO channel. (http://www.logoonline.com/shows/dyn/vickie_shaw/series.jhtml) She has been seen on Comedy Central’s “Premium Blend” and was one of the stars of the award winning film, “Laughing Matters More” (www.alloutfilms.com). She performs several times a year with Olivia Cruises and Resorts and has headlined countless Pride events throughout the country. Vickie doesn't have to go far from home for material - as a recovering SoB (Southern Baptist) and out lesbian mother, she's successfully raised two sons (one of whom is married and just gave her a "two perfect granddaughters"), has a college daughter and all of them are living at home in the "Compound", and a "husbian" in Sgt. Patch. Yeah there's enough material there to fill a few hours. Vickie has performed in almost every State in the US, and had headlined in too many venues to list here but trust us, this girl's been around.

Jennie McNulty - can currently be seen on MTV Network’s LOGO channel in the comedy special “One Night Stand Up”. She can also be seen bi-weekly in her walking talk show, "Jennie McNulty Presents: Walking Funny With…” on LOGO’s AfterEllen website (http://www.afterellen.com/taxonomy/term/3789 ). She has traveled the world doing comedy – literally. In addition to headlining in comedy clubs all over the US and Canada, she has entertained the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. She also does comedy in more peaceful settings as one of the favorites of Olivia Cruises and Resorts. Jennie spends her summer seasons performing nightly in Provincetown, MA and has performed at The Toronto Gay and Lesbian Comedy Festival; The “Dinah Shore” event; and dozens of Pride events coast to coast. Jennie also produces the popular “Rainbow Comedy Night” in Ventura, CA as well as the Gold! Comedy Hour in West Hollywood. McNulty is a regular at Harrah’s Casino in Las Vegas. She was also featured as a physical trainer on the hit NBC Show "Starting Over." AND, she plays women’s tackle football for the California Quake in the Independent Women’s Football League. From New Mexico FBIHOP:State Dems may add gay marriage to party platform

State Dems may add gay marriage to party platform
by: LP
Wed Apr 22, 2009 at 12:01:45 PM MDT

With the recent additions of Iowa and Vermont (not to mention Washington D.C.) to the ranks of states that allow same-sex marriage, some New Mexico Democrats hope the Land of Enchantment joins that short list soon.
Some New Mexico Democrats are pushing for the legalization of same-sex marriage to be added to the Democratic Party platform. In this year's session, domestic partnership failed after a floor vote in the Senate, but Gov. Bill Richardson is open to adding the domestic partnership proposal to a special session later this year.

"If the marriage resolution passed, that should send some message to legislators that action should be taken," Liz Stefanics, a state party central committee member, Santa Fe County commissioner and former state senator, told the Albuquerque Journal.

NY TIMES: Gay Rights Groups Celebrate Victories in Marriage Push

By ABBY GOODNOUGH
Published: April 7, 2009

MONTPELIER, Vt. — Gay-rights groups say that momentum from back-to-back victories on same-sex marriage in Vermont and Iowa could spill into other states, particularly since at least nine other legislatures are considering measures this year to allow marriage between gay couples.

A crowd gathered in the House chamber on Tuesday to await the outcome of a vote to override the governor’s veto.

The Vermont Legislature on Tuesday overrode Gov. Jim Douglas’s veto of a bill allowing gay couples to marry, mustering one more vote than needed to preserve the measure.

The step makes Vermont the first state to allow same-sex marriage through legislative action instead of a court ruling, and comes less than a week after the Iowa Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriages in that state.

New York, New Jersey, Maine and New Hampshire are among the states where such proposals have gained legislative support in recent months.

“This is a reminder to those legislatures that they should finish the job,” said Evan Wolfson, executive director of Freedom to Marry, a national advocacy group based in New York. “Contrary to the claims made by the opponents of equality, it’s not just judges, it’s not just the coasts, and it’s not just going away.”

National Gay and Lesbian Task Force hails historic Iowa Supreme Court ruling granting the freedom to marry to same-sex couples

WASHINGTON, April 3 — The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force hails today’s Iowa Supreme Court unanimous ruling in Varnum v. Brien saying that same-sex couples are legally entitled to marry. The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force was a signatory to a larger amicus brief supporting the marriage equality position. Additionally, Task Force organizers were recently sent to Iowa where they worked with One Iowa’s field staff to grow the group’s volunteer base that was active with One Iowa’s legislative advocacy in support of the freedom to marry.

Statement by Rea Carey, Executive Director
National Gay and Lesbian Task Force

“This ruling marks another watershed moment in the struggle for full equality. No longer will same-sex couples have their relationships treated as less than equal by the state. The court rightly affirmed that no loving committed couple should be denied marriage and the critical protections only marriage can provide. This ruling also affirms our common humanity by providing same-sex couples with the opportunity to participate in the shared hopes and dreams of making a public commitment to the person they love. We are thrilled that equality has come to Iowa!

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to the plaintiffs and groups that made today’s victory possible, especially to Lambda Legal for serving as lead legal counsel, and One Iowa for its statewide public education and advocacy to promote the freedom to marry. We know that many fair-minded Iowans — and fair-minded people across the country — will be celebrating with us in response to today’s decision.”

House Committee Appointments Announced! Some Positive Signs.

Austin, Texas (February 12, 2009) - The new Speaker of the Texas House, Rep. Joe Straus of San Antonio, has just announced standing committee appointments for the 81st Legislative Session. Straus, who is generally considered to be a moderate Republican, ascended to the Speakership with the support of the majority of Democratic house members. Naming the committee appointments was widely believed to be the first real test of Straus’ leadership and his bipartisanship.

Equality Texas is encouraged by the Speaker's appointments.

Straus has named several ardent pro-equality advocates as chair or vice-chair of legislative committees likely to review equality legislation. These include: Rep. Senfronia Thompson as Chair of Local & Consent Calendars, Rep. Pete Gallego as Chair of Criminal Jurisprudence, Rep. Elliott Naishtat as Vice-Chair of Public Health, Rep. Patrick Rose as Chair of Human Services, Rep. Mark Strama as Chair of Technology, Economic Development & Workforce; and Rep. Scott Hochberg as Vice-Chair of Public Education.

Other pro-equality advocates were appointed chair or vice-chair of committees that are unlikely to see bills in our legislative agenda. These include: Rep. Garnet Coleman as Chair of County Affairs, Rep. Donna Howard as Vice-Chair of Culture, Recreation & Tourism; Rep. Allen Vaught as Vice-Chair of Defense & Veterans Affairs, Rep. Jessica Farrar as Vice-Chair of Land & Resource Management, Rep. Rafael Anchia as Vice-Chair of Pension, Investments & Financial Services; Rep. Mike Villarreal as Vice-Chair of Redistricting, and Rep. Yvonne Davis as Chair of Urban Affairs.

While many of our well-qualified legislative supporters are absent from the places we’d like to see them, it was unreasonable to expect that the Speaker would rule based only on a pro-equality agenda. However, in most of those committees which will likely review equality-related legislation, we are confident that Equality Texas can work with those committee chairs to receive fair, reasonable, and timely hearings on our legislative agenda.

We have renewed hope for the chances of several bills in our legislative agenda (some filed, some yet to be filed). In a few cases, we have more concern about the prospects of a bill's success. However, it can easily be stated that committee appointments are no worse than the last several sessions, and likely a great deal better. Speaker Straus has stated that he has no taste for the wedge issue politics that have marked the last several legislative sessions. His list of committee chairs mostly reflects this.

Some of the committees have supportive membership, but historically non-supportive chairs - as in the case of Higher Education Chair Rep. Dan Branch. Branch's Dallas district is one of several house districts which defeated the 2005 marriage amendment, however Branch's voting record has been out-of-step with his district on legislation related to equality issues. It is conceivable that one of our legislative agenda bills, HB 861 providing for competitive insurance benefits for employees of the University of Texas and Texas A&M University Systems, could come before Branch's committee. If it does, it will be necessary to educate Rep. Branch and change his mind about the importance of equality to his constituents.

This is just one example of the importance of constituents coming to Equality Texas Lobby Day. Rep. Branch needs to see that his constituents support equality for all Texans. Every State Representative needs to see constituent support for equality. Lobby Day is on March 2, 2009.
