From the New Mexican - Santa Feans react to bishop's D.C. invite

Gay Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson said Monday that Barack Obama has asked him to give an inauguration prayer, an apparent attempt to quell anger over the president-elect's plans to have a controversial megachurch pastor as the highlighted clergyman.

Robinson, an outspoken gay-rights advocate whose leadership has divided the church, told the Concord Monitor in his home state of New Hampshire he will deliver his prayer at the Lincoln Memorial on Sunday — two days before Pastor Rick Warren gives the invocation on Inauguration Day.

American Southwest Theater Company at NMSU Theater Arts presents touring production DONA ROSITA'S JALAPENO KITCHEN

American Southwest Theatre Company at New Mexico State University Department of Theater Arts presents a limited engagement of the national tour of "Doña Rosita's Jalapeño Kitchen," starring acclaimed actress Ruby Nelda Perez, January 30 - February 1 at the Hershel Zohn Theater on the NMSU campus.

Written by Rodrigo Duarte-Clark, the Artistic Director and resident playwright of El Teatro de la Esperanza in San Francisco, this one-woman show is deliciously comic and peppered with the poignancy of cultural pride. A development project has targeted Hispanic owned businesses to make way for a tourist shopping mall. Doña Rosita invites the audience to sit and enjoy the “Last Supper” in her barrio of Salsipuedes while she contemplates selling her restaurant/home of 23 years.

"We're honored to bring a play of this caliber to Las Cruces," says American Southwest Theatre Company Managing Director Tom Smith. "Ruby Nelda Perez is a phenomenal actress in a phenomenal show, and we're thankful our audiences will be able to see this charming and wonderful production!"

Ruby Nelda Perez has been touring professionally throughout the USA, Mexico, and Latin America for over thirty years. She performed “Historias para ser Contadas / Stories to be Told” at the John F. Kennedy Performing Arts Center where she was honored with the Award of Excellence medal. The show is designed by the resident company of American Southwest Theatre Company.

"Doña Rosita's Jalapeño Kitchen" is sponsored by the Office of the President of NMSU, the Office of the Dean of Arts and Sciences of NMSU, and the Hispano Chamber of Commerce de Las Cruces.

Gender Role Free Dance Event

Gender-Role-Free Contra is a popular form of dancing with GLBT groups in Atlanta, Boston and San Francisco and now we want to bring it to Albuquerque. Come see for yourself how much fun it is by joining us for a social on Saturday, January 24, 2009 from 7:00pm to 10:00pm at the Emotions in Motion dance studio.

Contra is a form of American folk dance in which dancers form sets of parallel lines running the length of the hall. A caller, working with live musicians, guides dancers through a sequence of moves that ends with couples having progressed up or down the set. As the sequence is repeated, each couple will eventually dance with every other couple in the set. There is neither “gyrating hip action” nor any fancy footwork in contra.

Traditional contra dances are called with distinct gender roles and opposite-sex couples are normal. In gender-role-free contra, however, dancers come together in a friendly, non-gender-oriented environment. Dancers may choose to dance the male role or the female role, regardless of the dancer’s gender. The caller tries to use non-gender-specific terms rather than “ladies” and “gents.”

Tickets for this event are $10 per person and include beverages and food. Please browse our web site at http://www.contrasocial.com for more information. Of course, do not hesitate to contact us by email at info@contrasocial.com if you have any questions or comments.
